Erik I agree with your point. The strategy here must be two fold. However, I think that Penn State's initial reaction has made it much more difficult to cut ties with the responsible parties because of their immediate defense of the figurehead of the program. Now they will have to either weather the storm, taking their lumps in the process or take a massive step backwards and completely rid themselves of the current administration.

Keep your opening statement in mind; nobody knows any other Penn State figure head other than JoePa - so, regardless if they 'take a step back' and remember that football comes second - that's not how the public perceives the institution of Penn State.

I think there are two strategies for two different audiences here (at least). The "Penn State brand" - to the general public- will be judged through football, just as it always has. A reminder about academics coming first won't change public opinion.. that's a cop out. Now, that message to alumni and students? that works for me.

Nobody on the outside cares about Penn State academics. They spend $ to watch football. Cut ties and move on as best as possible. Tell the public that policies, people, and the institution failed and it's time for a total overhaul.
